What is a USB stick?

"Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a serial bus standard to interface devices. It was originally designed for computers, but its popularity has prompted it to also become commonplace on video game consoles, PDAs, portable DVD and media players, cellphones; and even devices such as televisions, home stereo equipment, car stereos and portable memory devices."

What is a USB?

-         USB flash drives are very small devices which help in transferring data from one PC to the other with the help of USB port.

-         Can be used to store data like a memory card

-         Portable, rewritable and removable

-         Uses flash memory data storage device of NAND type (Uses small chips to allow more memory to be packed in a small size).

-         Allow 64 MB to 250 GB of data to be stored on it.

What is it made from?

-         Casing -made of either plastic or metal or rubber for protection of the stored data.

-         There is a printed circuit board in the USB. The PCB is a highly reliable storage device. It is an assembly of electronic components of the computer that helps in its functioning. It proves to be a mechanical aid that connects these electronic components with the help of electric charge supplied to the system when it is turned on.

Why are they important?

-         Allows for a transfer of data from one computer to another

-         Replaces the need of floppy discs as well as CD-ROM’s to transfer data (Not all computers had CD-ROM writers therefore not every body could make use of CD-ROM’s efficiently, hence pen drives became used more frequently.)

-         Pen drives are also very easy, handy and portable. A person can easily carry it in his pocket.

-         Pen drive is a Initially, pen drives started with a memory input of 32 MB but these days pen drives with an internal memory of 7 GB are also available in the market.

I have put in bold the words I think are most important to remember when design my USB casing - although looks are important, fundamentally it has to work and protect the data that it stores.
