This project requires me to make use of CAD/CAM:
CAD (computer aided design) is the process of creating industrial product designs using computer software.
CAM (computer aided manufacturing) uses computers to programme these designs into equipment that will actually manufacture the products (or tools).
There are 3 main computer aided manufacturing pathways:
1. Material ‘wastage’
Laser cutting
CNC manufacture
Spark erosion
Waterjet cutting
2. Material addition
LOM modelling
Fused deposition modelling
3. Material remoulding
Injection moulding
Gravity die casting
Silicone tools/moulding
The Process I will use is a 3D addition process: FDM/3D printer
Fused Deposition Modelling Process:
o Part is made by extruding a molten thermoplastic material (ABS, Nylon) and depositing it in ultra thin layers, one at a time, on a fixed base to build the model up.
o Speed is an important benefit of this technology; many models can be produced in minutes rather than hours or days.
o The completed models can be used :
o as limited functionality prototypes
o as design verification for testing fit and/or form
o as patterns for investment casting.
For my USB project I will use the Fused Deposition Modelling Process to produce a model which can be used as prototype (My model should have full rather than limited functionality).
